Our Work

Each day the beauty of the world goes unseen by millions who suffer from blindness or low vision – a fact even more staggering when you consider that of the 161 million people worldwide with vision problems, 90 per cent live in the developing world.

The poor of sub-Saharan Africa and India are among the hardest hit. This is where Operation Eyesight is at work. It's a world where the risk of debilitating eye conditions is higher due to poor nutrition, inadequate sewage and a lack of clean water. Where access to health care and education is often limited, or non-existent, and the loss of sight can destroy a person's livelihood – or even life itself.

Yet for most of the people in these regions, blindness is actually treatable – even preventable – once medical facilities or community programs take root near their homes.

Operation Eyesight is working hard to make that happen. You can help. Without individual participation, none of this is possible. But thanks the generosity of people like you, amazing things are happening:

  • Top quality eye care centers are being created, led by indigenous medical teams.
  • Wide reaching prevention programs are opening the eyes of millions.
  • The highest level of treatment available to every level of society.

It all leads to the most amazing result of all — the way people see themselves. A once blind child recognizes her potential by returning to school. People are seeing their livelihoods renewed, and new opportunities appearing. Whole communities are perceiving a future where everyone can contribute, economies can grow, and each generation can move forward without blindness, or limitations.

It’s a new spirit of hope spreading across the developing world, where people are discovering they can see – and seeing all they have to offer. It all happens because of people like you.
