Mother’s Day 2021

55 percent of people with vision loss are women and girls. They experience barriers to eye health care that men don’t. They are at increased risk for infectious eye diseases because of traditional gender roles that require them to stay home and care for infected family members. They are not prioritized for treatment and are often required to look after things at home rather than seek help when they need it.

This Mother’s Day, you can help restore sight and prevent blindness for a woman in need. Every dollar will be used to ensure they get the quality eye health care they need right now, and well into the future. Your donation has the power to transform not only the life of a mother but the lives of her entire family as well. Please donate today.

If you’d like, you can choose to make your donation in honour your mother, grandmother, daughter or another amazing woman in your life. You also have the option to send her a “Happy Mother’s Day” eCard with a personalized message.

Your Impact

Your support could give a mother the gift of cataract surgery so she can see her children smile again. You could bring clean water to a community, stopping the spread of blinding bacterial diseases such as trachoma, and taking the burden away from women and girls to haul fresh water from long distances. Thank you.

Our focus on women and girls

Our partner hospitals train and employ women as community health workers, enabling them to contribute financially to their families and empowering them to become leaders in their communities.

Our community outreach programs screen people right where they live, so women are not overlooked for eye health care.

We ensure that mothers with cataracts are given surgery to allow them to see their children’s faces again.

We provide treatment for women with trachoma to end their pain and prevent them from becoming blind as a result of this disease.

Our community health workers educate women about eye health and other topics, such as prenatal care and nutrition.

As part of our strategy to eliminate blinding trachoma, we drill or rehabilitate boreholes, giving communities access to clean water and taking the burden away from women and girls to haul water. This allows women and girls to pursue an education or employment.

Vision centres provide families with access to eye health care services closer to home, ensuring mothers have somewhere to turn to if they or their children need help. If referral to a hospital is necessary, we provide transportation to the hospital and back when needed.

Overall, we’re committed to ensuring that all of our programs advance gender equality and are gender responsive. Learn more about how our work is helping achieve Sustainable Development Goal #5: Gender Equality.
